Remove the pit from a ripe avocado and rinse off all fruit residue
Identify the top and bottom of the pit
Insert 3 to 4 toothpicks around the middle of the pit
Suspend the pit over a glass of water with the bottom half submerged
Place the glass in a warm spot with bright, indirect light
Change the water every few days
Wait for the pit to split and roots to grow
Keep the bottom of the pit in water as roots develop
When the stem reaches several inches tall and has leaves, transplant it into a pot with well-draining soil
Plant the pit with the top half above the soil
Water the soil regularly and keep it in bright, indirect light
Allow the plant to grow and repot as needed
