Choose a ripe avocado and remove the pit
Wash the pit clean
Insert 3 to 4 toothpicks into the pit
Suspend the pit over a glass of water with the bottom half submerged
Place the glass in a warm, bright location
Change the water every few days
Wait for the pit to split and roots to grow
Plant the sprouted pit in a pot with well-draining soil
Keep the top half of the pit above the soil
Water the soil regularly to keep it moist but not soggy
Place the pot in full sun
Transplant the tree outdoors if the climate is warm enough
Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil
Dig a hole and plant the tree at the same depth as in the pot
Water deeply after planting
Mulch around the base without touching the trunk
Fertilize during the growing season
Prune the tree to encourage healthy growth
Protect the tree from frost and strong winds
Harvest avocados when mature and still firm
