Use dry, seasoned, small kindling
Build a loose teepee or log-cabin shape
Leave gaps for airflow
Start with a larger base of tinder and kindling
Add fuel gradually after the flame catches
Keep the lighter flame at the base of the tinder
Shield the fire from wind
Use paper, dry grass, or cotton as tinder
Avoid damp or green wood
Stack wood loosely instead of tightly
Place larger pieces only after the smaller pieces are burning well
Keep the fire in a safe, proper fire pit or container
