Rest the ankle and avoid activities that cause pain
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Use compression with an elastic bandage or ankle wrap
Elevate the ankle above heart level when possible
Limit weight-bearing and use crutches if needed
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Gently move the ankle as pain allows after the first day or two
Wear supportive footwear or an ankle brace
Gradually return to activity only when pain and swelling improve
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight, pain is severe, swelling is significant, or symptoms do not improve
