Use a warm compress on the affected ear
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Keep the ear dry
Rest and stay hydrated
Chew gum or swallow if pressure is from a cold or congestion
Use saline nasal spray if you have nasal congestion
Avoid putting cotton swabs, drops, or other objects into the ear unless advised by a clinician
Sleep with the painful ear slightly elevated
Seek medical care if there is fever, drainage, hearing loss, severe pain, swelling, dizziness, or symptoms lasting more than 1 to 2 days
