Use a warm compress on the ear for 10–15 minutes
Take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed on the label
Keep the ear dry
Avoid putting cotton swabs or objects into the ear
Sleep with the painful ear slightly elevated
Chew gum or swallow if pain is from pressure changes
Use over-the-counter ear drops only if the eardrum is not damaged and the label says they are safe
Treat nasal congestion with saline spray or a decongestant if appropriate
Rest and stay hydrated
Seek medical care if there is fever, drainage, hearing loss, severe pain, swelling, dizziness, or pain lasting more than 1–2 days
