Place the generator outdoors away from doors, windows, and vents
Use a heavy-duty generator power cord rated for the load
Connect the generator to the transfer switch inlet
Start the generator
Let the generator stabilize
Switch the transfer switch to generator power
Turn on essential circuits one at a time
Monitor load to avoid overloading the generator
Switch back to utility power when restored
Turn off the generator
Disconnect the generator cord
Follow local electrical codes
