Choose the Minecraft edition you want to host: Java or Bedrock
Decide whether to host on your own PC, a dedicated server, or a hosting provider
Check the system requirements for the server and your expected player count
Download the official Minecraft server software from the Minecraft website
Create a separate folder for the server files
Run the server once to generate the configuration files
Open and edit `eula.txt` and set `eula=true`
Adjust `server.properties` to set the world name, difficulty, game mode, and max players
Start the server again to generate the world and begin hosting
Allow the server port through your firewall
Forward the server port on your router if hosting from home
Share your public IP address and port with players
Use a static local IP address for the hosting machine
Keep the server machine powered on while the server is running
Install plugins or mods only if your server type supports them
Back up the world folder regularly
Update the server software when needed
Monitor performance and reduce view distance or player count if needed
Use a hosting provider if you want easier setup and better uptime
