Level the cake layers if needed
Place the first layer on a cake board or plate
Add a thin layer of frosting between layers
Stack the remaining layers evenly
Apply a thin crumb coat over the entire cake
Chill the cake until the crumb coat is firm
Add a thicker final layer of frosting
Use an offset spatula or bench scraper to smooth the sides and top
Decorate as desired
Chill before serving if needed
