Check for hallmarks or stamps such as 10K, 14K, 18K, 22K, 24K, or 417, 585, 750, 916, 999
Use a magnet; real gold is not magnetic
Look for discoloration, flaking, or worn plating, especially on edges and high-contact areas
Perform a density test; gold is very dense and feels heavy for its size
Rub the item on unglazed ceramic; real gold leaves a gold streak, not a black one
Apply a nitric acid test kit according to the instructions
Use an electronic gold tester
Compare the item’s weight and size with known gold pieces
Check for skin discoloration; real gold does not usually turn skin green
Inspect for craftsmanship and uniform color throughout the piece
Have a jeweler or assay office test it with professional equipment
