How to Install Ceramic Floor Tile?

Gather tools and materials: ceramic tiles, tile cutter, trowel, spacers, level, measuring tape, chalk line, thin-set mortar, grout, grout float, sponge, bucket, tile saw, and safety gear

Prepare the subfloor by cleaning it thoroughly and removing dust, grease, old adhesive, and loose material

Check that the subfloor is flat, dry, and structurally sound

Repair cracks, holes, or uneven areas in the subfloor

Install a cement backer board or approved underlayment if required

Plan the tile layout by measuring the room and marking center lines

Dry-fit tiles to avoid narrow cuts at walls and to confirm the layout

Mix thin-set mortar according to the manufacturer’s instructions

Apply mortar to a small section of the floor with a notched trowel

Press tiles into the mortar with a slight twisting motion

Place spacers between tiles to maintain even grout joints

Check tile alignment and level frequently as you work

Cut tiles as needed for edges, corners, and obstacles

Allow the mortar to cure for the recommended time

Remove spacers after the mortar has set

Mix grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions

Spread grout diagonally across the tile joints with a grout float

Remove excess grout from the tile surface with the float

Wipe the tiles with a damp sponge after the grout begins to firm up

Rinse the sponge often and repeat until the tile surface is clean

Allow the grout to cure fully

Apply grout sealer if required

Install baseboards or trim and caulk expansion joints if needed
