Gather tools and materials: ceramic tiles, tile cutter, trowel, spacers, level, measuring tape, chalk line, thin-set mortar, grout, grout float, sponge, bucket, tile saw, and safety gear
Prepare the subfloor by cleaning it thoroughly and removing dust, grease, old adhesive, and loose material
Check that the subfloor is flat, dry, and structurally sound
Repair cracks, holes, or uneven areas in the subfloor
Install a cement backer board or approved underlayment if required
Plan the tile layout by measuring the room and marking center lines
Dry-fit tiles to avoid narrow cuts at walls and to confirm the layout
Mix thin-set mortar according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Apply mortar to a small section of the floor with a notched trowel
Press tiles into the mortar with a slight twisting motion
Place spacers between tiles to maintain even grout joints
Check tile alignment and level frequently as you work
Cut tiles as needed for edges, corners, and obstacles
Allow the mortar to cure for the recommended time
Remove spacers after the mortar has set
Mix grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Spread grout diagonally across the tile joints with a grout float
Remove excess grout from the tile surface with the float
Wipe the tiles with a damp sponge after the grout begins to firm up
Rinse the sponge often and repeat until the tile surface is clean
Allow the grout to cure fully
Apply grout sealer if required
Install baseboards or trim and caulk expansion joints if needed
