Decide the shelf locations and spacing
Mark stud locations on the wall
Gather shelves, brackets, anchors, screws, level, drill, tape measure, and pencil
Remove any existing hardware or shelving
Mark the shelf height on the wall
Use a level to draw a straight reference line
Install wall anchors if needed
Attach shelf brackets or support rails to the wall
Secure brackets into studs whenever possible
Place the shelf on the brackets or supports
Check that the shelf is level
Fasten the shelf to the brackets if required
Repeat for additional shelves
Test each shelf for stability and weight support
Organize items on the shelves after installation
