How To Install GFCI Outlet?

Turn off power at the circuit breaker

Verify the power is off with a voltage tester

Remove the outlet cover plate

Unscrew and pull the existing outlet out of the electrical box

Take a photo or note the existing wire connections

Disconnect the wires from the old outlet

Identify the line wires and load wires

Connect the incoming power wires to the GFCI line terminals

Connect any downstream protected wires to the GFCI load terminals

Connect the ground wire to the green ground screw

Tighten all terminal screws securely

Fold the wires neatly into the box

Mount the GFCI outlet into the electrical box

Install the cover plate

Turn the power back on at the breaker

Press the test button to confirm the GFCI trips

Press the reset button to restore power

Test the outlet with a plug-in tester if available
