Check for a sweet, fragrant smell at the base
Look for a golden-yellow color developing from the bottom upward
Gently squeeze it; it should be firm with a slight give
Make sure the leaves look fresh and green
Tug the center leaf; it should come out with a little resistance if ripe
Avoid pineapples with soft spots, mold, or a sour smell
Heavier pineapples for their size are usually juicier and riper
