Check the color: many avocados darken as they ripen
Gently squeeze the avocado in your palm
If it gives slightly under light pressure, it is ready
If it feels very firm, it is not ripe yet
If it feels mushy or overly soft, it is overripe
Remove the stem cap and check underneath
If the area underneath is green, it is ready
If it is brown, it may be overripe
If it is hard to remove, it is not ready yet
Shake the avocado lightly
If you feel the pit move inside, it may be ripe
Check for even softness all around
Avoid avocados with deep dents or very wrinkled skin
