How to Know if Blood Pressure Is High?

Use a blood pressure monitor to check your reading

A normal reading is usually below 120/80 mmHg

Elevated blood pressure is typically 120–129/<80 mmHg

High blood pressure is usually 130/80 mmHg or higher

Repeat the measurement after resting for 5 minutes

Take at least 2 readings, 1 minute apart

Check readings on different days for confirmation

Watch for symptoms such as headache, dizziness, blurred vision, chest pain, or shortness of breath

Seek medical care if blood pressure is 180/120 mmHg or higher

See a healthcare professional if readings are repeatedly high
