Open the ratchet handle fully until it lies flat
Press or lift the release latch if your ratchet has one
Pull the webbing strap out of the spool to create slack
Unhook the strap from the anchor point
If the strap is stuck, keep the handle fully open and wiggle the webbing free
Avoid forcing the mechanism
Inspect the strap for damage before storing or reusing it
