Sit or lie down and stay still
Slow your breathing: inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, exhale for 6 to 8 seconds
Try the Valsalva maneuver: hold your breath and bear down gently for 10 to 15 seconds
Splash cold water on your face
Drink a glass of cool water
Loosen tight clothing
Stop activity and rest in a cool, quiet place
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and other stimulants
Try gentle, slow-paced breathing until your heart rate settles
If you have a prescribed medication for fast heart rate, take it as directed
Call emergency services if you have chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, or a very irregular heartbeat
Seek urgent medical care if your heart rate stays very high or does not come down after a few minutes of rest
