Gather untreated wood boards, nails or screws, a drill, saw, measuring tape, and sandpaper
Choose a birdhouse design suitable for the bird species you want to attract
Cut the wood into front, back, sides, floor, and roof pieces
Drill an entrance hole of the correct size for the target bird species
Drill a few small drainage holes in the floor
Drill small ventilation holes near the top on the sides
Sand all rough edges and splinters
Assemble the walls, floor, and roof with nails or screws
Leave the front or side removable for cleaning if possible
Make sure the roof overhangs slightly to keep out rain
Avoid using paint or use only non-toxic, outdoor-safe paint on the outside
Mount the birdhouse on a pole, tree, or post at the proper height
Place it in a quiet, safe location away from predators
Clean the birdhouse after nesting season each year
