Collect clean hardwood ashes from a wood fire or fireplace
Sift the ashes to remove charcoal, nails, and debris
Place the ashes in a non-metal container
Add hot water to cover the ashes
Stir the mixture well
Let it sit for several hours or overnight
Drain the liquid through a cloth or fine filter into another non-metal container
Repeat the soaking and draining if a stronger solution is desired
Boil the filtered liquid gently to evaporate the water
Continue until a dry white or gray residue remains
Scrape up the residue and store it in a sealed container
Wear gloves and eye protection while handling the ash and solution
Keep away from aluminum containers and surfaces
Use only in well-ventilated areas
