Gather cardstock or thick paper, scissors, ruler, pencil, glue or tape, and optional ribbon or decorations
Choose the size of the gift box you want to make
Draw a square or rectangle on the cardstock for the base
Add equal-sized flaps on all four sides of the base
Draw corner tabs if needed for easier folding and assembly
Cut out the template carefully
Score the fold lines with a ruler and a blunt tool
Fold along all scored lines
Apply glue or tape to the tabs
Attach the side panels to form the box
Hold the edges together until secure
Repeat the process for a matching lid if desired
Decorate the box with paper, stickers, ribbon, or paint
Place the gift inside and close the box
Secure the lid or tie it with ribbon
