Gather cotton fabric, batting, scissors or rotary cutter, ruler, pins or clips, and a sewing machine
Cut fabric into equal-size squares
Cut batting into slightly smaller squares
Make fabric sandwich layers with one square of backing, one square of batting, and one square of top fabric
Pin or clip each layered square
Sew an X or straight lines through each square to secure the layers
Arrange the sewn squares into rows
Sew the squares together with seams facing outward
Join all rows to form the quilt top
Sew around the outer edge of the quilt
Clip the seam allowances every quarter inch without cutting the stitching
Wash the quilt to create the ragged texture
Dry the quilt and shake out loose threads
Trim any remaining loose threads if needed
