Gather an iron nail, insulated copper wire, a battery, and tape
Wrap the copper wire tightly around the nail many times
Leave both wire ends free
Strip the insulation from the ends of the wire
Attach one wire end to the positive battery terminal
Attach the other wire end to the negative battery terminal
Keep the connection brief to avoid overheating
Test the magnet by bringing it near small metal objects
Disconnect the battery when finished
