How To Make Arepas?

2 cups pre-cooked cornmeal

2 1/2 cups warm water

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon oil or melted butter, optional

Mix water and salt in a bowl

Slowly add the cornmeal

Stir until a soft dough forms

Let the dough rest for 5 minutes

Divide the dough into equal portions

Shape each portion into a thick disk

Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat

Lightly grease the surface

Cook the arepas for 5 to 7 minutes per side

Transfer to a 350°F oven for 10 to 15 minutes, optional

Slice open and fill as desired
