Preheat the oven to 400°F (205°C)
Wash and scrub the sweet potatoes
Pat the sweet potatoes dry
Pierce each sweet potato several times with a fork
Rub the skins lightly with oil if desired
Place the sweet potatoes on a baking sheet or directly on the oven rack
Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on size
Check for doneness by inserting a fork or knife into the center
Remove from the oven when tender
Let cool for a few minutes before serving
Slice open and add toppings if desired
