Warm 1 cup milk and 2 tablespoons water to lukewarm
Add 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar
Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy
In a bowl, mix 3 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon salt, and 2 tablespoons sugar
Add 1 egg and 3 tablespoons melted butter to the yeast mixture
Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients
Mix until a dough forms
Knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic
Place dough in a greased bowl
Cover and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours
Punch down the dough
Divide into 8 equal pieces
Shape each piece into a smooth ball
Place on a lined baking tray and flatten slightly
Cover and let rise again for 30 to 45 minutes
Brush tops with beaten egg or milk
Sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired
Bake at 375°F to 400°F for 15 to 18 minutes until golden brown
Cool on a wire rack before slicing
