Gather cornmeal, all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, egg, milk, and hot dogs
Insert wooden sticks into the hot dogs
Pat the hot dogs dry
Mix cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl
Whisk egg and milk together in a separate bowl
Combine the wet and dry ingredients until smooth
Heat oil in a deep pot or fryer to 350°F
Pour batter into a tall glass or cup
Dip each hot dog into the batter and coat evenly
Let excess batter drip off
Carefully place the coated hot dogs into the hot oil
Fry until golden brown, turning as needed
Remove and drain on paper towels
Serve warm with mustard, ketchup, or other dipping sauces
