Use a can of sweetened condensed milk
Remove the paper label
Place the unopened can in a pot
Cover the can completely with water
Bring the water to a gentle simmer
Keep the can submerged by adding more water as needed
Simmer for 2 to 3 hours for a lighter color
Simmer for 3 to 4 hours for a darker color
Turn off the heat
Let the can cool completely before opening
Open the can carefully
Stir the dulce de leche until smooth
Transfer to a jar or container
Refrigerate after opening
