Gather ground beef, salt, pepper, oil or butter, and burger buns
Divide the beef into equal portions
Shape each portion into a patty
Press a small dent in the center of each patty
Season both sides with salt and pepper
Heat a skillet or pan over medium-high heat
Add a small amount of oil or butter to the pan
Place the patties in the hot pan
Cook for 3 to 5 minutes on the first side
Flip the patties
Cook for another 3 to 5 minutes on the second side
Add cheese during the last minute if desired
Check that the burgers are cooked to your preferred doneness
Toast the buns in the pan if desired
Remove the burgers from the pan
Assemble the burgers with buns and toppings
Serve immediately
