Gather 6 to 8 vanilla beans, 1 cup of vodka, and a clean glass bottle or jar with a tight lid

Split each vanilla bean lengthwise, leaving one end attached if desired

Place the vanilla beans into the jar

Pour the vodka over the beans until they are fully submerged

Seal the jar tightly

Store the jar in a cool, dark place

Shake the jar once or twice a week

Let the extract steep for at least 8 weeks

For best flavor, let it steep for 4 to 6 months

Use the extract as needed after steeping

Top off with more vodka as you use it, if desired

Add more vanilla beans over time for a stronger extract
