If you need lye for soapmaking or cleaning, buy food-grade or soapmaking-grade sodium hydroxide from a reputable supplier.
Wear chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection, and long sleeves when handling lye.
Always add lye to water, never water to lye.
Use a well-ventilated area and non-aluminum containers.
Keep lye away from children, pets, and moisture.
If lye contacts skin or eyes, rinse with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical help.
