Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat
Add 2 to 3 minced garlic cloves and cook for 30 seconds
Stir in 1 small chopped onion and cook until softened
Add 1 can tomato paste
Cook the tomato paste for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring often
Add 2 cups water or broth gradually, stirring until smooth
Stir in 1 teaspoon salt
Add 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Add 1 teaspoon dried oregano
Add 1 teaspoon dried basil
Add 1/2 teaspoon sugar
Add red pepper flakes if desired
Simmer on low heat for 15 to 20 minutes
Adjust thickness with more water if needed
Taste and adjust seasoning
Toss with cooked spaghetti and serve
