Rest the knee and avoid activities that cause pain
Use crutches if walking is painful or unstable
Wear a hinged knee brace if recommended
Apply ice for 15 to 20 minutes several times a day
Compress the knee with an elastic bandage if advised
Elevate the leg above heart level when possible
Follow a physical therapy or rehab program
Do gentle range-of-motion exercises as soon as allowed
Strengthen the quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip muscles
Avoid twisting, pivoting, and contact sports until cleared
Take anti-inflammatory or pain medicines only as directed
Eat enough protein, vitamins, and minerals to support healing
Stay hydrated
Get adequate sleep
Return to activity gradually after symptoms improve
See a doctor if pain, swelling, or instability worsens
