Stand the horse on level ground
Have the horse stand squarely with all four feet evenly placed
Find the highest point of the withers
Place a measuring stick or tape at the ground beside the front hoof
Measure vertically up to the top of the withers
Use a horse measuring stick for the most accurate result
Convert the measurement to hands by dividing inches by 4
Record any remaining inches after the whole hands
Write the height in hands and inches, such as 15.2 hands
Count only full inches, not decimal inches
Round according to the measuring standard being used
