Use a ruler or tape measure
Find the widest part across the object
Measure straight through the center from one edge to the opposite edge
For a circle, measure the distance across the center
For a pipe or cylinder, measure the outside edge to outside edge
For a hole, measure the inside edge to inside edge
Use calipers for more accuracy
Record the measurement in the desired unit
Repeat the measurement to confirm accuracy
