Open your Google Doc
Click Tools
Click Word count
Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows or Command+Shift+C on Mac
Check the word count in the pop-up window
Select Include textboxes, footnotes, and endnotes if needed
Click OK to close the window
