Place your dog on a flat, level surface
Make sure your dog is standing naturally with all four paws on the ground
Keep the head in a normal position, not stretched up or lowered
Locate the withers, which are the highest point of the shoulders
Use a measuring tape or ruler to measure from the ground to the withers
Hold the measuring tool straight and vertical for an accurate reading
Record the measurement in inches or centimeters
Repeat the measurement a few times to confirm accuracy
