Stand the horse on level ground
Use a horse measuring stick or a tape measure and a level
Measure at the highest point of the withers
Place the measuring tool straight up from the ground next to the horse
Keep the horse standing square and still
Measure from the ground to the top of the withers
Record the height in hands, inches, or centimeters
If using hands, divide the inches by 4
Round to the nearest quarter hand if needed
