Line up the decimals in the factors so the digits match by place value
Ignore the decimals and multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers
Count the total number of digits to the right of the decimal points in both factors
Place the decimal point in the product so that it has that many digits to the right
Add trailing zeros to the product if needed to place the decimal correctly
Remove any unnecessary trailing zeros after the decimal (keep at least one digit if the result is an exact zero)
