Identify the cation first and name it
Use the element name for a monatomic metal cation
Use the name ammonium for NH4+
Identify the anion second and name it
Use the nonmetal root plus -ide for a monatomic anion
Use the polyatomic ion name unchanged for polyatomic ions
Include a Roman numeral for metals with multiple possible charges
Determine the metal charge from the anion charge if needed
Do not use prefixes such as mono-, di-, or tri- in ionic compound names
Write the cation name followed by the anion name
For compounds with hydrates, name the ionic compound first and then the hydrate with a prefix and the word hydrate
