Gather supplies: automotive paint, primer, clear coat, sandpaper, masking tape, masking paper, degreaser, tack cloth, spray gun or aerosol cans, respirator, gloves
Work in a clean, well-ventilated, dust-free area
Wash the car thoroughly
Remove dirt, grease, wax, and contaminants with degreaser
Remove trim, badges, lights, mirrors, and other parts if possible
Repair dents, rust, and body damage
Sand the existing paint to create a smooth surface
Feather-edge any damaged paint areas
Mask off windows, tires, trim, and any areas not being painted
Wipe the surface with a tack cloth
Apply primer in thin, even coats
Let the primer dry fully
Sand the primer smooth
Clean the surface again before painting
Apply base coat in thin, even layers
Allow proper flash time between coats
Apply additional base coats until coverage is even
Apply clear coat in thin, even layers
Let the clear coat cure fully
Wet sand and polish if needed for a smooth finish
Reinstall removed parts
Inspect the paint for runs, dust, or uneven areas
Follow paint manufacturer instructions for drying and curing times
