Gather watercolor paints, brushes, watercolor paper, water, palette, and paper towels
Stretch or tape the watercolor paper to a flat surface
Sketch the subject lightly with a pencil
Mix a small amount of paint with water on the palette
Test the color on scrap paper
Start with light washes and build up darker layers gradually
Use more water for lighter, transparent washes
Use less water for richer, darker color
Paint from light to dark
Let each layer dry before adding the next if you want clean edges

Blot excess water or paint with a paper towel

Lift color with a clean damp brush or tissue if needed
Allow the painting to dry completely before removing tape or framing
