How To Perform CPR?

Check responsiveness and call emergency services

Check breathing for no more than 10 seconds

If not breathing normally, start chest compressions

Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest, place the other hand on top, interlock fingers, keep arms straight

Compress the chest hard and fast at a rate of about 100–120 compressions per minute

Depth: about 2 inches (5 cm) in adults

Allow full chest recoil between compressions

Perform cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths if trained and able

Open the airway using head tilt–chin lift

Pinch the nose closed, make a seal over the mouth, give 2 effective breaths (watch for chest rise)

If breaths are not possible, do compression-only CPR

Continue CPR until help arrives, an AED is ready, the person starts breathing normally, or you are too exhausted to continue

If an AED is available, turn it on, follow voice prompts, and apply pads to bare chest as directed

Stop CPR briefly to analyze rhythm, then resume CPR immediately when instructed
