Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil
Loosen the soil to a depth of 12 to 18 inches
Mix in compost if the soil is poor
Water the seedling before planting
Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball
Remove the seedling from its container carefully
Place the seedling in the hole at the same depth it was growing before
Fill the hole with soil and gently firm it around the base
Water the seedling thoroughly after planting
Space sunflower seedlings according to the variety’s mature size
Add mulch around the plant without touching the stem
Water regularly until the seedling is established
Support tall varieties with a stake if needed
