Remove the pit from the avocado and rinse off all flesh
Identify the top and bottom of the pit
Insert 3 to 4 toothpicks around the middle of the pit
Suspend the pit over a glass of water with the bottom half submerged
Place the glass in a warm spot with indirect sunlight
Change the water every few days
Wait for the pit to split and roots to grow
Plant the pit in a pot with well-draining soil when roots are several inches long and a stem has formed
Keep the top half of the pit above the soil
Water the soil lightly and keep it moist
Place the pot in bright indirect light
Transplant outdoors only after the plant is established and weather is warm
