How to Plant Chives?

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil

Loosen the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches

Mix in compost or aged manure if needed

Sow chive seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost or outdoors after frost danger passes

Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep

Space seeds or seedlings 6 to 12 inches apart

Water lightly after planting

Keep the soil evenly moist until seeds germinate

Thin seedlings if they become crowded

Mulch lightly to help retain moisture and reduce weeds

Cut back flower stalks if you want to encourage leaf growth

Harvest leaves when plants are established and about 6 inches tall
