Wear long sleeves and long pants
Tuck pants into socks or boots
Wear light-colored clothing to spot ticks more easily
Use EPA-registered insect repellent on skin
Treat clothing and gear with permethrin
Stay on marked trails and avoid tall grass and brush
Avoid sitting directly on the ground or on logs in tick-prone areas
Check yourself, children, and pets for ticks during and after the hike
Shower soon after returning indoors
Put hiking clothes in a hot dryer after the hike
Remove attached ticks promptly with fine-tipped tweezers
Inspect gear, backpacks, and shoes after hiking
Keep hair tied back and covered if possible
Reapply repellent as directed on the label
