Read the label and instructions before use
Carry the spray where it is easy to reach
Remove the safety clip or safety tab when ready to use
Hold the can firmly with two hands if needed
Aim slightly downward toward the approaching bear
Spray in short bursts, not a continuous stream
Keep the bear spray between you and the bear
Use it when the bear is close enough to be effective
Move away slowly after spraying if it is safe to do so
Replace the can after use or if it expires
Store it in an accessible place, not buried in a pack
Check the expiration date regularly
Practice removing the safety and aiming before going out
