Ensure the flag is worn, torn, or no longer fit for display
Remove the flag from service respectfully
Fold the flag properly before disposal
Burn the flag in a dignified, private, and respectful manner
Use a clean, safe fire source and allow the flag to be completely consumed
Dispose of the ashes respectfully after the fire is out
If burning is not appropriate, contact a local veterans organization, American Legion, VFW, or Boy Scouts troop for a flag retirement ceremony
If local laws or conditions prohibit burning, follow an approved ceremonial disposal method through a qualified organization
