Test all light strands before starting
Choose outdoor-rated lights if decorating an outdoor tree
Gather a ladder, extension cord, and clips or ties if needed
Start at the base of the tree
Wrap the lights around the trunk first
Work upward in a spiral pattern
Space the lights evenly as you go
Move from the trunk to the larger branches
Tuck lights deeper into the branches for a fuller look
Keep the plug end accessible near the bottom
Secure loose sections with clips or ties
Avoid overloading outlets or connecting too many strands
Check the display from a distance and adjust as needed
Turn off and unplug lights when finished or unattended
